I have always tried to be as green as possible.  We recycle as much as we possibly can, compost and use freecycle (does everyone know about this amazing network?  You can offer things you no longer need - and ask for what you need - but no money changes hands.  Well worth checking out).  We have recently moved to a house we're renovating and are insulating it furiously and will hope to get the majority of our heating from wood burners.
Any great tips for living a greener life?  Would love to know anything unusual.  One of the problems I have found is that, so far, a lot of new green technology is expensive (geothermal/solar etc) but  hopefully, as demand increases, this will come down in price.

DH and I have always lived frugally and somewhat green before it even became the rage.  We live in a small cottage that is around 750 sq.ft. We recycle, we recently reinsulated our attic and it has made a difference. Over the years we've also reinsulated the walls, and put in double paned windows. We live where it is warm most of the year, so only use heating maybe 5 times in the winter if we are lucky.  We do use our a.c. though and try to change our filter once a month as that helps the a.c. run more efficiently.  Our cottage was built around 1950.

I agree that eco friendly products are very expensive and don't buy them for that reason.  I don't use as much laundry or dishwashing liquid as recommended. I have read some recipes for making your own eco friendly laundry soap but haven't tried that yet.  We don't have a dishwasher or a clothes dryer.  I use a 'solar' clothes dryer.

Fascinating, Flower Lady.  Now somewhere I have read that using a dishwasher (providing it is a high energy efficiency one) actually uses less energy than handwashing.  Can this be?  Anyone able to explain (or refute?)

Hi Jane ~ I've also read this recently.  I've never had a dishwasher.  There is just the two of us.  I lightly rinse and stack dishes in the sink, then when ready to wash them I wash them in one sink, pile the washed dishes in other sink til the sink is full, then rinse them.  I can hardly believe that washing dishes in a dishwasher is more energy efficient, considering the electricity, and the water used, but I didn't do the study.  They do save time. I've used them at other people's homes.  I enjoy washing dishes looking out the window into our secret garden, seeing the butterflies flitting about one flowering shrub that we have and seeing the blue sky, other flowers and trees, etc.  I feel thankful.

We are all unique, living different lives.  If we ever sold this place and moved into a house that had a dishwasher, I would use it.

By a lovely coincidence I looked up just before I read your post and noticed a crowd of butterflies merrily dancing around the large buddleia bush (butterfly plant) in our garden......
